However there are some Koreans who cannot enjoy the holidays as well as others and they are the separated families from North and South Korea. Within the next few years, the U.S. is hoping to transfer command over the Republic of Korea military back to the president of South Korea. However, Koreans are still recovering from the shock of the death of Private Yoon, a medic in the 28th Regiment in the Republic of Korea Army, after continuous beatings from other soldiers who shared a barracks with him. In light of recent events, many Korean citizens and military insiders have posed the question of whether the Korean military is ready to say that it is ready to defend its country in the case of a full-scale war with North Korea or any other foreign enemy. I would argue however, the deaths of soldiers caused by fellow servicemen shows that a powerful and effective military requires something far beyond vast numbers or state-of-the-art weaponry. Sanae Dakaichi, the newly appointed Minister of General Affairs of Japan announced in a statement on the 5th that Japan will continue to host worships at the Yasukuni Shrine, reports Yonhap News. Often referred to as the “War Criminals Shrine” by Koreans and other non-Japanese, the statement has stirred a considerable amount of controversy within Korea and other countries that have historically fought against Japan during the Second World War. This upcoming October, the United States Supreme Court will rule on a Muslim inmate’s lawsuit against the Arkansas Department of Correction. The lawsuit was made after the prisoner was forced to shave his beard by a prison guard and that it violated his freedom of religion.
