KCCC (Korea Campus Crusade for Christ) is one of the largest Korean-American Christian ministries that focus on college students. Preparations are currently underway for KCCC’s annual winter conference, Higher Calling 2014. Every year, around 3,000 students from all over California alone participate in this conference held by KCCC L.A. and 5 other regions around the United States. Last Sunday, the staff of KCCC hosted a fundraiser night for this event where they invited church leaders and other KCCC alumni to participate in thie movement.
The fundraiser was hosted at the KCCC headquarters in Los Angeles, and it involved a dinner and a brief but powerful time of worship and prayer. Each of the guests were admitted when they showed a ticket that they had purchased for 100 dollars. All the money that was paid by the guests will be used to fund the conference and even KCCC students who want to participate in Higher Calling, but have financial difficulties. Dinner was provided by members of LA Yong-Nak Church.
Many pastors were there, and many of them were even members of KCCC as students, and staff. Some were even serving as staff for KCCC in Korea before the immigrated to the United States. Praise was led by Peter Lee (full time KCCC staff) and a number of staff from Korea CCC’s music missions ministry.
A testimony was given by a student from USC (University of Southern California) and has participated in previous Higher Calling Conferences while serving as a student leader in KCCC. The student shared before the supporters about the importance of an event like Higher Calling for the rising generation of Korean-Americans. In addition he also talked about how he was inspired to serve in KCCC leadership after Higher Calling in his freshman year and how he was led to go on summer missions during his college years.
Koreans are still a relatively new group of immigrants to the United States so even within Christian families, there is a great deal of tension and lack of conversation between parents from Korea and 2nd generation children. Even within the church there is some conflict between the leadership of the Korean ministry and English ministry. Ministries on campus however, have played a significant role in bridging the different generations together under the single goal of spreading the Gospel to all corners of the U.S. and the world.
Bora Kim, a full-time KCCC staff thanked all the guests and leaders for showing up and contributing to this movement to build-up a God-fearing generation and led the congregation in prayer for the conference. That night, they specifically prayed for the guest speakers who are invited to give message; Jim-Bob Park (Oriental Mission Church), Eugene Cho (Quest Church), Greg Stier and Donghwan Kim (KCCC USA director).
Higher Calling 2014 will begin on the 21st of December and last for 4 days with students from all over Southern California. Higher Calling will also take place all over the nation in Northern California, Chicago, New York, Canada, Boston and Atlanta.
