Sochi Olympic Opening Ceremony

The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games kicked off this Friday and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) began distributing condoms for all the participating athletes to use for the 2-week duration of the event. Around 100,000 condoms will be given out to the 2,800 participating athletes. The IOC officially announced to TMZ that the condoms are to prevent HIV and AIDS infections among athletes.

The distribution of condoms is not an unusual practice for the IOC. Olympic Games insiders have organized what they call an Olympic Village. The nearly 3,000 Olympian athletes have been dispersed into three housing zones where they will be staying for the next 16 days. Athletes from past Olympic Games have testified that there is a great deal of sexual activity going on within athletes’ housing areas.

Hope Solo, a goal keeper for the American female soccer tea, who participated in the 2012 London Games told ESPN that sexual activities are very common among the Olypic participants. Some even do it on the grass and other very public areas. Another athlete reported that around 70 percent of all participants from various countries engage in these activities.

Others have talked about the intense partying atmospheres that arise in the Olympic Village, particularly if a participating athlete had won a medal. This is not a very surprising outcome since the Olympic Village houses an unlimited supply of alcohol for the athletes to consume.

Although this year, the committee will not be distributing the condoms directly to the athletes and instead will be left for Olympians to pick up, many have already expressed great disappointment at the reality of the men and women who will be playing their respective sports as representatives of their nations.
