Debate at Creation Museum

The debate between Bill Nye “the Science Guy” and Ken Ham (Answers in Genesis) stirred up great interest throughout the web and was the most anticipated event online even before it took place. At least 3 million people were reported to have viewed the debate through the live stream, and many Christians gathered at their churches to watch it together. The talk took place at the Creation Museum in Kentucky.

The two men talked about whether creation could be viewed as a valid cause of the origin of life in the modern scientific academia. The debate brought up a number of both valid and interesting points regarding creation and evolution. Ken Ham who was arguing for creation pointed to the misrepresentation of the term “science”. He argued that creation and evolution are completely different fields; that there is a distinction between natural science and historical science. Therefore, in Dr. Ham’s view the question of whether creation can be a valid “scientific” is more of a philosophical problem.

Bill Nye on the other hand, pointed to evidence such as the layers of rock in the Grand Canyon. He was essentially emphasizing an aged Earth that was billions of years old. He also stated that science tended to advance faster when scientists were more evolution-based. However this argument was soon countered when Dr. Ham gave the example of Dr. Raymond Damadin, the inventor of the MRI scanner.

A half-hour-long post-debate analysis took place soon after the talk ended with Ken Han and Dr. Georgia Purdom, a museum scientist. This too was streamed live for all to see.
