News 1 reported that North Korea’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Soo-yong Lee is planning to visit the United States for the first time in 15 years. Many experts have begun to express that there is a positive signal for diplomatic talks between the DPRK and U.S. to resume.
In the middle of next month, NK State Secretary is planning to attend the United Nations conference that will be held in New York City. In addition, Dong-il Lee, North Korea’s U.N. representative has not denied their Secretary of State’s visit to America and it seems as if the visit will take place as planned.
North Korea and political analysts have expressed that this recent move by North Korea is simply to provide Secretary Lee with experience in the international community since he is their recent, newly appointed Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. However, others have expressed that there is more to this visit in accordance with the recent changes in US-DPRK political relations.
The “New York Channel” is a position during the Six Party Talks that promotes conversation between North Korea and the U.S. For the past 14 months this position was empty, but recently the U.S. government has announced that they will be appointing someone new to fill the position in light of the recently increasing diplomatic connections with North Korea.
Overall, it appears that the U.S. is quickly preparing to restart its political talks with North Korea. There are even rumors that U.S. ambassadors have secretly visited Pyeongyang via helicopter. Although the U.S. has not confirmed these rumors, South Korean intelligence officials have reported that they even witnessed a U.S. aircraft enter into North Korea not too long ago.
Meanwhile, many are still watching with expectation the political table and how the future anticipated talks between North Korean and United States will unfold.
