The House Republicans announced the conclusions that they reached regarding reform of immigration laws. In a nutshell, even though the administration finally decided that reform is necessary, the principles that they outlined placed a heavier emphasis on border security and interior enforcement. As a result, a great deal of immigrant families are unable to join other family members who have already entered the United States.
Key figures of NAKASEC (National Korean American Service & Education Consortium), a group founded in 1994 by various community centers to promote the rights of Korean and Asian Americans, and other affiliated organizations spoke out against the administration’s policies.
Dae Joong (DJ) Yoon, NAKASEC’s director had this to say:
“The House of Republicans finally recognized that immigration reform can no longer be set aside and have announced their principles. Yet, we must remind Congress that every day thousands of families are being torn apart. The House of Republicans must commit themselves to an immigration policy that aligns with the core American value that everyone is equal and that all hardworking immigrants should be welcomed into the US as new citizens.”
Besides reminding America of her central values as a Christian nation, Pastor Yoon also noted that immigrant families contribute a great deal to the Unites States through family sponsorship, and that the mistake of segregation must not be repeated.
NAKASEC is currently urging Speaker John Boehner to work with both parties to quickly bring a new bill to the table that would grant citizenship for the millions of still unregistered immigrants spread all across the country.
