Shin-soo Choo, the Korean outfielder and leadoff for the Texas Rangers has recently announced that he will not be participating in any other games for the remainder of the 2014 Major League Baseball season. Choo, who was considered one of the top outfielders in the American League, has not been able to live up to the team’s expectations with a disappointing batting average of 0.243.
It has turned out however, Choo had agreed with the Rangers to go through surgery even before the season had begun. During the Rangers’ spring camp, the ball club’s doctors had discovered a bone that was protruding from Choo’s elbow that could cause some trouble when batting and plying defense for the field player. However, at the time Choo had told his doctor that he did not have difficulty while batting. Because experts believed that this rogue bone would grow over time, Choo had agreed with his team to undergo surgery in March of 2015 after this season.
Although there were no problems for the outfielder at the beginning of the season, by mid-April Choo’s hitting sense had been completely unbalanced. In addition he had a small injury in his ankle and had to undergo the rest of the season trying very hard to not damage his arms and legs even further.
At the same time however, the Rangers’ other fielders and even some pitchers began to suffer from injuries that prevented Choo from taking a break from the season. Ron Washington, the manager of the Rangers expressed great gratitude for Choo after including him on the DL for continuing to try his best in every game despite the harsh circumstances.
As of now, there is almost no change for Texas to make it into the playoffs, and John Daniels, the owner of the ball club, has already urged the coaching staff to begin planning for the next season. He also suggested that they have Choo take his surgery earlier in the beginning of September than in March as they had originally planned.
Choo was taken out of the starting roster on the 24th after being diagnosed with a serious cold. He is likely going through surgery as soon as he recovers from his fever and it will take approximately 8 weeks of rehab before he gets back on the field.
Meanwhile, Hyun-jin Ryu, the Korean pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers has recently been injured during a game with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Didgers coaching staff announced that Ryu is highly likely to start for the Giants game on the 1st of September.
