The U.S. Secretary of State has announced shortly after the incident that the U.S. will be active in rescuing the 200 kidnapped school girls in Nigeria. Specifically, the U.S. government has announced that it will be sending forces to Nigeria to rescue the girls who were abducted by Boko Haram, a Nigerian Muslim terrorist group. The Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans (CANAN) expressed their praises at the government’s decision.
According to a representative from CANAN John Kerry, the secretary of state and President Obama have already proposed that the U.S. dispatch intelligence personnel through the embassy in Nigeria. He also revealed that the Nigerian government had accepted the proposal, to which the Christians were grateful.
Dr. James Fadel, the leader of CANAN had even reached the United Nations Security Council to officially categorize Boko Haram as a terrorist group.
ABC News reported that the Obama administration had already decided to dispatch armed forces in Nigeria. President Obama told ABC, "You've got one of the worst regional or local terrorist organizations in Boko Haram in Nigeria, they've been killing people ruthlessly for many years now and we've already been seeking greater cooperation with the Nigerians – this may be the event that helps to mobilize the entire international community to finally do something against this horrendous organization that's perpetrated such a terrible crime."
Goodluck Jonathan, the president of Nigeria has accepted the proposals made by the U.S. government.
Boko Haram is a terrorist group that has been fighting against both the Nigerian government and the nation’s Christian populations. Its members have shot civilians to death and most recently abducted 8 more local girls from the village of Warabe in addition to the over 200 school girls kidnapped earlier. It is believed that the terrorists will sell the girls to Islamic militants to become their wives.
