Bryan and Lannette Davies, a couple from Sacramento, California have been found to be running a store selling marijuana to help the needy and spread the Gospel. They told Time Magazine that they had been told by God to open the store. They went as far as to refer to themselves as the only medical cannabis in Sacramento.
Bryan Davies explained to Time Magazine how he had initially prayed to God for a means to earn money, and that God had given him conviction to open a pot shop and that that was his will. As time passed the Davies’ shop began to acquire a steady stream of regular customers who are highly satisfied with the service and products they were paying for. In addition, the Davies placed Bibles here and there for the customers to look at and even set aside time to pray for them.
According to several regular customers, it appears that the store has been a somewhat effective means for evangelism. Bryan had this to say to Time Magazine about some of his clients: "Some people come in here and have cancer and some die. A lot of them have been Christian and believers that were pissed at God, so that's why all of a sudden the prayers started here.”
The business that the Davies are running is currently legal in California by state law. However, Canna Care is in the middle of a legal case fighting against tax penalties. For Lannette, the court case was both a spiritual battle and an opportunity sent by God. "We did keep completely clean records, everything was done absolutely correctly to the point that we did pass an audit," said Lanette. "They (IRS) allow you to take the cannabis as your deduction, but they disallow you all the legal expenses. … But then they make this deal: 'If you give us a couple extra percent of your growth sales, this all goes behind you.' So is it federally illegal or not? Because you'll allow us to stay in business if we give you more money."
Though the legal battle over tax reductions is still underway, the Davies said they plan to continue business until they can.
