Disney's animated film "Big Hero 6" has soared to the top of the weekend box office as it competed with sci-fi adventure movie "Interstellar" for the number one spot.
Figures have shown that Disney's latest animated comedy outperformed Christopher Nolan's attempt to highlight the journey of a team of astronauts in search for a planet fit for human habitation.
With Don Hall and Chris Williams taking on directorial duties, "Big Hero 6" follows the story of a 14-year-old robotics expert named Hiro Hamada and his inflatable robot. Released in theaters last Nov. 7, the superhero-comedy film has already been met with mostly positive reviews.
The animated feature film raked in $56.2 million this weekend whereas "Interstellar", starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, placed second on the box office list with a total haul of $47.5 million.
Other movies that performed well in the weekend box office include "Gone Girl" directed by David Fincher, starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. As a film adaptation for Gillian Flynn's novel of the same title from 2012, the thriller movie has now pulled in over $145 million after more than a month of being released in theaters, raking in an extra $6.2 million this weekend.
Meanwhile, supernatural horror film "Ouija" from director Stiles White sank one spot lower in the fourth place as it pulled in $5.9 million in the box office.
American war film "Fury" starring Brad Pitt, Shia LeBeouf and Logan Lerman settles down in fifth place with a weekend haul of $5.6 million.
Comedy drama film "St. Vincent" by Theodore Melfi made it to sixth place with its $5.4 million haul, with Bill Murray appearing as the main character alongside Melissa McCarthy and Naomi Watts, among others.
Jake Gyllenhaal's "Nightcrawler" dropped to seventh place with $5.4 million while action thriller "John Wick", which stars Keanu Reeves as a former hitman, takes eighth place with $4.1 million.
Taking on the ninth and tenth places are "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" from Disney that scored $3.5 million in ticket sales, and "The Book of Life" to which Channing Tatum and Zoe Saldana have lent their voices, pulling in $2.8 million, respectively.
