Fans of ‘Vikings’ can look forward to an exciting season as History Channel’s Irish-Canadian drama will have an extended fourth season. While the series was initially up for 16 episodes, it will now have four more, thereby offering 20 episodes overall for its new installment.
The show is expected to air its first 10 episodes and go on a midseason break before coming back for the next 10 episodes in the latter part of next year.
In the last season, King Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) triumphed over the battle in Paris, but he is set to deal with an even larger threat as his health condition worsens, becoming a great danger to his throne and his own life.
Meanwhile, Ragnar’s first wife Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) faced her own struggles with one of her Hedeby villagers- the ambitious Kalf (Ben Robson).
The fourth season of ‘Vikings’ will put forward either King Ragnar's second wife Queen Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) or his son Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) to take over his throne, although it is more likely that possibilities will be more in favor of his son.
The circumstances brought on by Ragnar’s brother, Rollo (Clive Standen), and his decision to form an alliance with Emperor Charles (Lothaire Bluteau) of West Francia will also be explored.
New characters will also be introduced in ‘Vikings’ season four, such as King Harold Finehair, played by Peter Franzén, who was described as "a complex character who seeks to be King of Norway and a potential threat to Ragnar.”
Jasper Pääkkönen has also signed on as Halfdan The Black, the harsh and cruel young brother of King Harold, along with Dianne Doan as Yidu, a "completely different character" in which Ragnar will be interested.
In the new poster unveiled, the image is inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of ‘The Last Supper’ in which Ragnar is featured at the center of a long table along with a number of family, friends and enemies on his side.
For instance, Ragnar’s childhood friend, Floki, was revealed to have murdered the King’s late friend and Christian monk, Athelstan. Ragnar is then faced with the decision to either serve justice or save his friend’s life.
As revealed by Entertainment Weekly, at least two characters will betray the King in season four, as suggested by the new poster.
‘Vikings’ season four is set to begin airing on Feb. 18.
