For the past few seasons, "The Big Bang Theory" has made fans laugh because of Dr. Sheldon Cooper's (Jim Parsons) awkward romantic involvement with fellow scientist Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik).
The two were often teased by their friends because of the boundaries they've set on their relationship. However, things are going to change this December.
Showrunner Steve Molaro earlier teased that Sheldon and Amy are going to take their relationship to the next level by becoming more intimate despite their current split, and now, he is explaining to The Hollywood Reporter why they decided to take this giant leap with Sheldon and Amy.
"They've been together on and off for over five years and it just seemed to be a good way to ultimately resolve this journey they've been on, including this break-up as well," he said.
"How long could we make this poor girl wait?!" Molaro added, referring to Amy's frustrations about Sheldon's lack of intimacy.
"I liked that there was something unexpected about it. You could have easily made an episode like this be a season finale or something like that so why not pull the trigger when people think we may not. The stories lined up with Star Wars coming out. We were so excited about it and we felt it was time," he continued. "The fact that we were able to find a way to blend Star Wars with something for us on Big Bang - it's such an event for Sheldon and Amy, I couldn't be happier with it."
Meanwhile, show creator Chuck Lorre said that it was essential for them to split Sheldon and Amy up in order for them to progress in their relationship.
"Their relationship floundered this season," Lorre said. "It helped spur them to move forward and pursue their relationship more aggressively, having realized that you don't know what you've got until it's gone, as the song goes. That happened for Sheldon - missing Amy was wearing on him in a way he hadn't anticipated."
Parsons and Bialik themselves were shocked to find out about their characters' developments in season 9, but they are happy nonetheless.
"We were very surprised," Bialik said. "She's not supposed to know about it; it's supposed to be something he surprises her with, but Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) leak the information, which I think is pretty smart."
"He wants to get her a gift and something that shows that he thinks she's special," added Parsons.
