Huge changes are about to go down in the new season of ‘Bates Motel.’ In a recent interview with ComicBook.com at the Walker Stalker Con in Atlanta, actor Nestor Carbonell revealed that fans can look forward to big moments when the drama thriller makes a comeback on A&E next year.
"Like many of the shows I get to do, it's pretty tight-lipped," the actor, who plays Sheriff Romero on the series, explained. "All I can say, is it'll have to be big. There's a lot of payoff. There's been a lot of set up until now, so there will be payoff."
As for what viewers can look forward to when it comes to the show's male lead, Carbonell said, "We saw Norman's (Freddie Highmore) descent already clearly happening especially through the second half of last season so we'll see more of that to come, no doubt about it."
The 47-year-old star has also kept mum whether fans of the show will finally get to see Romero and Norma (Vera Farmiga) become a romantic pair next season.
"For my part, whether anything is gonna happen with Norma ... she's a frustrating woman, that's all I've got to say," he added. "She's a tough one. She's a tough nut to crack so we'll see what happens there."
According to ‘Bates Motel’ executive producer Carlton Cuse, Norman Bates will begin his transition and demonstrate more similar traits to his counterpart in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film ‘Psycho’ in the fourth season.
"For the first three seasons of the show, we have watched in a slow, progressive way his development of becoming the guy he is going to become,” Cuse said.
The executive producer also went back to the beginning of the show and discussed how Norman has grown, from being a teenage who experienced blackouts and personal issues to becoming a much more “different” person.
“At the end of the third season of the show, he really becomes unhinged in a different way he had before,” Cuse further explained. “That really sets up a different version of the Norman that we know from the movie."
In addition, as Norman transforms to becoming the character in the movie and doing even more surprising things, Cuse pointed out that such progression should be exciting to watch. The Primetime Emmy winner also noted that ‘Bates Motel’ season four promises viewers that Norman will finally be “unleashed.”
Meanwhile, Carbonell also announced that he will be directing another episode of ‘Bates Motel.’
"They're gonna let me do episode eight of next season. So, I'll have to prep that one," said Carbonell, who helmed the fifth episode of the season three last year.
