The highly-anticipated ‘Sherlock’ Christmas special has been set for a premiere in more than 100 UK cinemas for one night only on New Year's Day (Jan. 1, 2016).
As previously announced, the special episode features Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) as they go back to Victorian London, where they will try to solve an "impossible case".
Such BBC special was previously teased earlier this year with official promo images showing the fan-fave duo all decked in outfits that seemingly belong to the Victorian era.
In an interview with UK’s Express, series creator Steven Moffat dropped hints of what is to come for this famous resident of 221B Baker Street in the upcoming Christmas special.
“The first few days we were just so excited because we saw our show with Benedict and Martin in the proper gear and his extraordinary sideburns and you think ‘why didn’t we always do this? Why did we make that silly mistake of updating it?'” Moffat said.
Meanwhile, a fourth season of the hit crime drama series is said to go into production next year in time for an official premiere in 2017.
“We’ve got a clear idea of what we’re going to do and it’s going to be a clear shift in tone,” Moffat stated, referring to the fourth season. “Yes, there’s going to be some dark stuff coming but there always is.”
Apart from incorporating a darker tone, the TV writer and producer assured fans that the same elements that were present in the past seasons can still be expected from the new installment.
Following the hit series’ debut in 2010, ‘Sherlock’ developed a pattern of releasing three episodes with 90 minutes each per season. The last episode titled ‘His Last Vow’ concluded the third installment with a cliffhanging event as it teased the comeback of villain Jim Moriarty, played by Andrew Scott.
Titled as 'The Abominable Bride,' the upcoming episode is written by series creators Moffat and Mark Gatiss. Well-loved characters Mary Morstan (Amanda Abbington), Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) and Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) will also be featured in the special.
