Demi Lovato is shedding more light on her personal struggles as she tells it all in her latest album, ‘Confident.’
In a brand new video shared on her personal YouTube channel, the former Disney star shared her sentiments on one of the album’s most special and emotional tracks titled ‘Father,’ and how it serves as a musical tribute to her own father, Patrick Lovato, who passed away in 2013.
Contrary to Lovato’s usually vibrant and colorful music videos, the black and white clip touches a more sensitive subject as the 23-year-old star opens up about her unlucky relationship with her late father, Patrick, to whom the ballad is dedicated.
"I was very conflicted when he passed because he was abusive," Lovato says in the clip. "He was mean, but he wanted to be a good person. And he wanted to have his family, and when my mom married my stepdad, he still had this huge heart where he said, 'I'm so glad that he's taking care of you and doing the job that I wish I could do.'"
The singer also shared that recording the track served as therapy in some way, giving her a chance to reflect on her conflicted emotions.
"He knew he wasn't capable of raising a family, and it was because of his mental illness. To know that it really wasn't his fault really was saddening to me. I wanted to write about it; I wanted to process it," she explained.
This June, the pop sensation opened up about her new album, referring to the set of songs as an opportunity to show the public what she is capable of.
'For this album, I’m making music that feels right to me,' she stated. 'This time around, I was able to explore different sounds, and hone in on something that I’m really proud of.'
Music artists who appear on the ‘Confident’ album include rapper Sirah and Iggy Azalea, Lovato referring to the latter as both a “good friend” and an “incredibly talented” artist.
Meanwhile, the pop star recently made an appearance on Saturday Night Live as a musical guest, with performances of songs from her new album, including ‘Cool for the Summer,’ ‘Stone Cold’ and the album's title track.
Lovato also paid a visit to Sao Paulo, Brazil where she received a Diamond Certificate for her ‘Confident’ album on Wednesday; such award recognizes artists in terms of the number of albums and singles sold in a specific period.
