With the nearing premiere of ‘Grey's Anatomy’ season 12, fans can look forward to the series focusing on Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), and how she will deal with the death of her partner, Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey).
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, series creator Shonda Rhimes said that a new character, to be played by Martin Henderson, will be introduced towards the last few episodes of season 12.
Rhimes also stated that the doctor character should not be deemed as McDreamy’s replacement as Meredith will set out on an insightful journey in the upcoming season.
"That's not really the point. Meredith's on a journey, Meredith's always been on a journey, and I'm taking her where the journey leads her, so we'll see what she feels like," the executive producer explained.
However, it has been predicted by TV Line that towards the latter part of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 12, Meredith will begin opening herself up to a new individual, and this could be Henderson's character.
Meanwhile, Rhimes also confirmed that Meredith will be staying in her mother's home, and will be joined by Maggie (Kelly McCreary) and Amelia (Caterina Scorscone).
The female trio is expected to bring on a fun element to the series owing to their different personalities.
After Derek's death, Amelia can also be expected to seek reassurance and support from Owen (Kevin McKidd). Meanwhile, Maggie will begin placing more value on her relationship with Meredith.
Rhimes previously described Pompeo’s character as the heart of the show. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 44-year-old actress herself opened up about cutting off characters, such as Shepherd and her character’s best friend, Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), and how it makes things feel different.
"We're looking for things to not stay the same. They have to stay the same to some extent but you welcome change because that's what inspires the writers, that's what inspires the actors. Change is necessary for growth,” Pompeo explained.
Meanwhile, Rhimes has already assured fans that the upcoming season will thrive on a much lighter tone compared to the previous installment.
"It was a nice feeling to be so light again but in a way that didn't feel like we're trying so hard; it felt natural," she said.
ABC’s ‘Grey's Anatomy’ season 12 is set to make its official premiere on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. ET.
