Showtime's political thriller ‘Homeland’ is set to move away from its traditional Islamabad terrorist storyline for its fifth season, and will drift towards a number of new current issues.
Season five of the hit series will present its characters as they try to address the new threat from terrorist group ISIS, Showtime Entertainment President David Nevins revealed to TV writers.
Carrie Mathison’s (Claire Danes) other tasks will also include trying to take the helm in the tense relations between the U.S. and Vladimir Putin's Russia.
Episode one for the fifth season is titled ‘Separation Anxiety,’ in which fans will see Carrie going back into the world she left behind. Thee official synopsis released by Showtime states:
“As the danger intensifies, and without Saul and Quinn to rely on, one thing becomes clear: she’s never been at greater risk or with more to lose.”
In the promotional images unveiled by Showtime, Carrie can be seen being reunited with her former CIA boss, Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin.) Things have not been fine between the duo after the latter turned his back on Carrie and sided with Dal Adal in the final episode of the fourth season.
Now, the fifth installment will pick up two years after Carrie’s unfortunate tenure as Islamabad station chief, with which a terrorist attack on the US embassy went unforeseen and a large number of people lost their lives.
According to Showtime, the hit political thriller series will see Carrie "struggling to reconcile her guilt and disillusionment with years of working on the front lines in the 'war on terror.” The lead character will also see herself in a self-imposed exile in Berlin, isolated from the CIA and employed at a private security firm.
“Carrie is out of the intelligence business when the season starts and she finds herself in Berlin. It's a center for dissidence,” executive producer Alex Gansa explained. “That's where hacktivists go because German privacy laws are so strict. It's hard to have surveillance on people there."
Carrie will also bring her daughter Francesca to Berlin and stay with boyfriend Jonas Happich, although not for a long time as her past is bound to catch up to her.
As for Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) whose last appearance showed him leaving for Iraq, he is set to go back to his assassin days.
In a new trailer, viewers can have a glimpse of Carrie being pleased with her life in Berlin together with her daughter and new partner. However, things quickly take a wrong turn.
She goes with her new wealthy boss, Otto Düring (Sebastian Koch), to a war zone, where several unidentified assailants ask her if she was a member of the CIA.
“I was in CIA, I am a private citizen now,” Carrie responds.
Saul also receives a text saying, "We have a data breach in Berlin."
The clip also shows Saul discussing a new task with Quinn, particularly the killing of a new target whose name is placed in a box.
"If the name is in the box, I will take care of anything you put there,” Quinn responds.
In another trailer, a reunion for Carrie and Quinn was also teased, with the black ops agent saying, "Your name is on the kill list, somebody wants you dead.”
Carrie responds, "How would you feel if you had to leave your kid?" and Quinn says, "Not everyone is fit to be a parent."
The footage concludes with Carrie telling her little daughter, "You are the best thing that happened to be. And I love you very very much."
Showtime’s ‘Homeland’ season five is set for an official premiere on Oct. 4.
