Microsoft announced that it is working on helping users whose smartphones were bricked by a Windows 10 update.
According to the company, the firmware contained a bug which allowed non-supported devices to download and install the update, Engadget reported.
Earlier this week, Microsoft released the Windows 10 Mobile build 10536 to users from its Fast Ring Windows Insider program. Although the update was online designed for certain device models, other Windows Phone users were still able to install it.
Due to the incompatibility issues between the firmware and the non-supported devices, some handsets were left unusable.
Gabriel Aul, the head of Microsoft's Windows Insider explained that after investigating the issue, they discovered a bug in the update. He explained that because of the glitch, the update was not able to detect if a device is supported or not.
To make matters worse, some users who commented on WM Power User's report said the update is automatically downloaded to devices. It then just asks users if they want to begin its installation process. Those who are unaware of the problem or the list of Microsoft's supported devices for build 10536 can accidentally end up bricking their devices.
Currently, Microsoft is advising owners of non-supported handsets to reflash their device if they were affected by the update. According to the company's site, majority of supported devices for the Windwos 10 Mobile build are from its Lumia line. The HTC One M8 for Windows is also listed as a supported device.
In addition, the handsets should also have at least 8GB of available internal storage and should be running on Windows 8.1 as their stock operating system.
Aul assured affected users that Microsoft is taking the matter seriously. He noted that the company is currently preparing various repair options for users.
"We're working on repair options for the devices that were not supported but got the latest build," he tweeted. "Mostly HTC 8X phones, but some BLU and other."
"This is a high priority for us to solve and have a team dedicated to it," Aul added. "We will let you know as soon as we have info on recovery."
Build 10536 is the latest version of Windows 10 Mobile released by Microsoft for its Insider program. It aims to gather feedback from users before launching the platform to the public later this year. However, this isn't the first time that that the company encountered problems with its updates. Previously, the release of older versions was delayed due to various bugs and glitches, according to Myce.
