For those who want to take action for the cause of North Korean refugees but don't know where to start, an opportunity to help is coming up. As Crossing Borders, the hosting organization, put it, "All you have to do is show up and eat."
Crossing Borders, a Christian non-profit dedicataed to helping North Korean refugees, is hosting a fundraiser called "Eat for North Korea," or "E4NK," on September 16 at 7:30 PM at the Urban Seoul 2.0 restaurant in the Irvine Spectrum. Regular admission is $60, and $75 for a t-shirt along with admission.
"100% of the proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to provide vital aid and support to North Koreans and their children in China," Crossing Borders stated.
Those who attend the event will also have the opportunity to meet Crossing Borders staff and volunteers and ask any questions regarding the organization's work, and the situation of North Korean refugees in China.
Crossing Borders was founded in 2003, and focuses on sharing the gospel and providing food, shelter, medical assistance, and counseling to North Korean refugees in China, and also operates several group homes for children whose North Korean parents have either abandoned them or are unable to sufficiently take care of them.
"While there are some 27,000 refugees in South Korea, they have access to a lot of support and services from the government and non-profit organizations there," said one of the Crossing Borders staff, regarding their focus in doing work in China. "Meanwhile, there are about 200,000 refugees in China, and only a handful are able to receive any form of help."
The organization is currently helping some 50 refugees and 50 orphans in China to become healthy and self-sufficient through their programs.
