As one of Disney's promotional tools for the upcoming film "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens," the company has released a new mobile game designed for iOS and Android devices.
Dubbed as "Star Wars: Uprising," the new game provides a back story for the latest installment in the "Star Wars" movie franchise, according to NDTV.
The game's plot is set after the events of "Return of the Jedi," also known as "Star Wars Episode VI." Following the fall of the Empire and the death of Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, Adelhard, the Imperial Governor of the Anoat Sector enforces an iron rule on the region to maintain his power and authority. This forces the inhabitants of the sector, which is mainly composed of criminals, to form their own alliance in order to overthrow Adelhard.
The narrative of the game is part of the entire "Star Wars" epic and will lead up to the story of the "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens" film.
As noted by Gamespot, "Star Wars: Uprising" is a role-playing game that features a game play style similar to that of Blizzard's "Diablo." Gamers can choose to play customizable characters from various classes such as Gambler, Diplomat, Rebel Guerilla, Bounty Hunter and Smuggler.
Its co-op mode can support up to four players and provides real-time battles. The game also takes players to the various environments featured in the film series such as Cloud City and Hoth.
"Star Wars: Uprising" officially came out on September 9 and was published by Disney Interactive Studios. It was developed by Kabam, the studio behind various mobile games such as "Fast & Furious: Legacy," "The Hunger Games: Panem Rising" and "The Lord of the Rings: Legends of Middle-earth."
It can be downloaded from Google Play and Apple's iTunes as a free game. However, it contains various in-app purchases that can boost players' skills, weapons and items.
As for the latest film from the series, "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens" is set to premiere in North America on December 18. The film is set 30 years after the story of "Return of the Jedi" and features a combination of new characters as well as old ones.
It stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis and Lupita Nyong'o. Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, ark Hamill and Peter Mayhew will also appear in the film to reprise their roles from the series.
