British Prime Minister Winston Churchill defined courage as "what it takes to stand up and speak" and "what it takes to sit down and listen." Every person needs to be encouraged when they are discouraged by life's circumstances. People need courage to be bold and strong in the face of bad news. The Hebrew word for courage is chazaq. Chazaq is a verb, which means "to be or grow firm," "to be or grow strong," and "strengthen." In the Bible, God often commands His people to "be strong and courageous." The basis for God's commandment for the Christian to not fear, is not that the circumstance in front of them is small, but that God is big. Whether we are facing bad news about finances, health, family, school, or work, God reminds us through the Bible that He is with us wherever we go. Christianity Daily compiled a list of twelve Bible verses about having courage.
