Teenagers with superhuman strength and abilities return to fight robots and monsters in an all-new ‘Power Rangers’ film. Character descriptions on the upcoming movie were released early August 2015. The live-action movie will incorporate Jason, Kimberly, Trini, Billy, and Zack, the original five characters from the ‘90s television series.
The teenagers are all 17-year-olds who attend a high school, but can morph into Power Rangers and fight evil monsters. Collider listed detailed descriptions on all five characters on Aug. 11. Jason, the leader of Power Rangers is a former town football star whose life dramatically changed upon incurring a severe knee injury during a car crash. Jason is “a kid in need of redemption.”
Kimberly used to be a popular student at school until she disappeared for six months. She returned and no one knows the secret behind the reason while she left. Kimberly returned with a brand new rebel attitude. Trini is a smart girl, but is a loner without a stable group of friends. Trini’s parents move frequently due to work and she is forced to be the “new girl” at every school.
Billy is a socially awkward, yet smart student. He has no filter when it comes to his emotions, thoughts, and attitudes. Zack is a charming, cool, and tough guy. Zack is the center of attention in group settings. No one knows that he lives in a trailer park with his single mother.
"I read the script and was really surprised by it and thought there was a really cool, contemporary, mature but still playful, buoyant, and fun take on the material, and was updated in a really interesting way," said film director Dean Israelite in an interview with IGN. "It had this wonderful character that's essential to going on a fantastic adventure. I was instantly drawn to it.
“I hope it's going to feel very grounded at the same time, and very contemporary and have a real edge to it, and a real gut to it. So I think it's going to be a fun, joyful [movie] but one that feels completely grounded in a real world, with real characters going through real things.”
‘Power Rangers’ is scheduled to hit theaters on January 13, 2017. The producers of the film are Brian Casentini, Marty Bowen, and Wyck Godfrey. The script was written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. The film is a spinoff of the American television series based on the Japanese superhero show ‘Super Sentai.’
