Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy combined have won four of the last five major championships and they are competing against each other in the 2015 PGA Championships at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. It competition begins Thursday, Aug. 13 and ends on Sunday, Aug. 16.
“If Spieth and McIlroy have a quality that sets them apart, it’s their resilient mental health,” reported the Washington Post on Wednesday. “It’s a main component that allows them to be repeat major champions, as important as their brilliantly constructed swing mechanics.”
Spieth is ranked as the #2 player in the Official World Golf Ranking at age 22, whereas McIlroy is ranked as the #1 golfer at age 26. When asked who was the best player in the world, McIlroy answered that in light of recent months, it was Spieth. As for whether Spieth or McIlroy is the best golfer, McIlroy said that he would answer that question on Sunday.
“I think that’s just what you guys want to see. He and I just want to go out there and try to win the tournament,” said McIlroy. “We have to beat each other in order to do that, along with [the 155 other] players in the event.’’
McIlroy, who ruptured his ankle ligament and damaged his joint capsule in July, said that he is off pain medication this week. The Irish golfer got the injury from playing soccer with friends and had to go through rehabilitation treatment.
American golfer Spieth aims to win his third major in 2015, which he says “would be a pretty cool place in history to be a part of.”
"Unlike the first two majors, I had a chance to win and I didn't pull it off," said Spieth. "That was the hardest part to get over for me. It wasn't coming here, trying to win a Grand Slam. ... So this week, I'm looking to try and get myself into that position again and see if I can improve on it."
