With ‘Downton Abbey’ season 6 being set for a premiere on Jan. 3, 2016, filming for the final season of the hit period drama has already wrapped. As the British TV series will officially put forward its final episodes, there have been several speculations about what could happen when the show reaches its end.
In an interview with entertainment news site TheWrap, ‘Downton Abbey’ creator Julian Fellowes opened up about the main theme for majority of the episodes for the sixth season, which is “resolution.”
“You can have different degrees of conclusion. In some stories, something can happen, that's the end of the story and everyone's either happy or unhappy,” Fellowes explained, while adding: “I want you to finish the last episode feeling contented, and not feeling cheated. Sometimes in a movie the clever twist at the end just leaves you feeling cheated, and I don't want that.”
Moreover, one of the show’s main characters, Lady Mary Crawley, should be able to choose a suitor. Michelle Dockery’s character has to make an appropriate decision when it comes to her love life in the sixth season.
Following the death of her husband Matthew in season three, Lady Mary spent the fourth season in grief and the next season reflecting on her possibilities with her suitors and attempting to get over her past.
While the eldest Crawley daughter rejected Lord Tony Gillingham’s wedding proposal to her in ‘Downton Abbey’ season five, her chances of exchanging vows with Henry Talbot is seemingly better after the charming stranger greatly delighted her on the dance floor.
Another wedding might also be in place as the romance between Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes will be more evident in ‘Downton Abbey’ season six, particularly after the proposal scene in last year's Christmas special.
Executive producer Gareth Neame assured fans that "it felt right and natural for the storylines to come together" for the upcoming season, thereby hinting at a marriage ceremony for the well-trusted butler and the kind-hearted head housekeeper.
Moreover, the Daily Mail reported that, aside from a wedding, there will also be a funeral in ‘Downton Abbey’ season six.
Rob James-Collier, who takes on the role of butler Thomas Barrow, said that he can "probably guarantee a wedding, the odd funeral or two or nine."
In addition, Tom Branson is expected to make a comeback for the final episode. The ‘Downton Abbey’ season five Christmas special left viewers expressing grief over his decision to leave.
However, actor Allen Leech was reportedly spotted filming scenes at the Brooklands Museum of what was observed as a motor race, which teases the return of Tom for the last few episodes.
With ‘Downton Abbey’ being expected to conclude with a happy ending for all the characters, fans can look forward to the beginning of its sixth season on Sunday, Jan. 3.
