Following the release of the official ‘Suicide Squad’ trailer, Harley Quinn has clearly been put forward as the main character in the clip.
The crowd at Comic-Con excitingly cheered on upon seeing Margot Robbie’s character dangling from the top of her cell in Belle Reve prison.
Looking at the footage, it reveals several tidbits that could suggest how the fan-favorite character ended up becoming a criminal and in the same circle as the Joker.
It has been a big question for the trailer’s viewers whether ‘Suicide Squad’ will be highlighting the backstory of Harley Quinn, particularly before she became the Joker’s psychotic subordinate.
Before ending up in a crazed state, Robbie’s character was known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel who was assigned to Arkham Sylum where she provided treatment for the Joker, played by Jared Leto.
Observing how she was fixated on the supervillain’s psychotic disturbances, the Joker used such obsession to take advantage of Dr. Quinzel and distort her mind into joining forces with him.
Although it is unclear if director David Ayer will be focusing on such story for his version of Harley Quinn, the recently unveiled ‘Suicide Squad’ trailer does show Robbie sporting a ponytail, wearing glasses and a doctor’s coat in several scenes.
The Joker seemingly raids a lab with a band of criminals wearing masks and carrying ammunition, one of whom was even sporting a Batman mask.
Towards the opening of the trailer, similar individuals can be seen shooting up a room and confronting a woman with blonde hair, glasses and a doctor's coat, presumably Robbie as Dr. Quinzel.
In the middle of the clip, the frightened female is seen lying on a table with safety straps shoved in her mouth and the Joker's tattooed arms hanging around over her.
Associating this scene with the Joker's final moment at the end of the trailer, the supervillain is seen in the same location and prepping up for an electroshock treatment on his subject, which could once again be assumed as Dr. Quinzel.
Based on these scenes, it can be presumed that the Joker caries out his promise to hurt her “really, really bad,” from which the now mad and insane Harley Quinn comes to be.
Aside from Robbie and Leto, ‘Suicide Squad’ stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Adam Beach as Slipknot and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
There will also be mystery roles for Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Raymond Olubowale, Alex Meraz, Jim Parrack and Common.
‘Suicide Squad’ will make its way to theaters on Aug. 5, 2016.
