The princesses have always been the stars of Disney's animated films as well as recent live action flicks, but it looks like Prince Charming will be getting his time in the sun too now that Disney has picked up a script that will present the fairy tale story from his point of view.
Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Disney has picked up a script written by Matt Fogel, and it has been described as a revisionist take centering on a handsome prince. Right now though, it remains unclear whether the character will be the prince from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" or "Cinderella."
David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman are set to produce along with Tripp Vinson. Alex Young would be executive producing.
However, a different report from Variety says that the live action movie will not focus on Prince Charming, but instead put the spotlight on his "brother who never lived up to the family name," therefore giving another interesting twist to the classic story.
Disney has had a successful run of its live action movies, which started with "Maleficent" starring Angelina Jolie. The story gave a modern rendition of the classic "Sleeping Beauty" tale. Everybody knows that Maleficent was the scorned fairy who cursed Aurora with death during her party, but the film gave her reason for scorn - despite her friendship with Aurora's father, he betrayed her by clipping her wings in order to ascend to the throne. She thought to seek revenge on his child, but after looking after her, Maleficent grew to love Aurora and sought to reverse the spell she cast. In the end, the true love's kiss Aurora needed to wake up from her long sleep did not come from the prince, but from Maleficent herself, who truly loved her.
"Maleficent" was followed by Kenneth Branagh's "Cinderella," which starred "Downton Abbey" star Lily James and "Game of Thrones" alum Richard Madden. Disney is not content to stop there, and is currently filming the live-action rendition of "Beauty and the Beast," which will be directed by Bill Condon. It will star "Harry Potter" alum and UN Ambassadress for gender equality Emma Watson as Belle, while another "Downton Abbey" alum Dan Stevens has been recruited to play her prince - the Beast.
"The Hobbit" star Luke Evans will play Gaston while Josh Gad, the actor who lent his voice as Olaf in the highly successful animated film "Frozen" will be playing his sidekick LeFou.
