After Warner Bros. unveiled their full slate of movies based on DC Comics, no release dates have been revealed for the new Batman and Superman standalone films despite being mentioned to be in the works.
Speculations have strongly suggested that Ben Affleck’s Batman will get his own standalone movie, although there have been scarce details about Henry Cavill starring in another Superman feature film.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cavill shared about film opportunities, but he believes that following the story of the Man of Steel can become a huge challenge.
“There’s plenty of time for individual Superman sequels,” the actor told EW. “He’s a tough character to tell. People like the darker vigilante. I think it speaks to the human psyche more easily rather than the god-like being that we can’t really understand.
He further opened up about developing a world wherein his character can be given more opportunities, saying, “Once we have a more expansive universe we can delve more into the character of Superman and hopefully tell more stories.”
Despite no details of having his own official movie soon, fans can look forward to Cavill’s appearance as the last son of Krypton in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.’ He has also signed on for ‘Justice League Part One’ in November 2017 and ‘Justice League Part Two’ in June 2019.
Although there have been limited plot details, ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ had reportedly taken inspiration from Frank Miller’s series, ‘The Dark Knight Returns’, which pitted the two superheroes against each other.
When asked whether the upcoming brawl could be deemed a reasonable fight for Batman, who has had various iterations over the past years ranging from Michael Keaton to Christian Bale, Affleck talked about how his own version of Bruce Wayne was made to undergo more personal changes this time.
"He's on the verge of being swallowed up by the anger and the rage that we see haunt this character in the other manifestations of it," the recently divorced actor stated. "But this guy is further down the line and has become more embittered and cynical."
Aside from Batman and Superman, they will also be joined by Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. All in all, these heroes are known to be the key characters for Warner Bros. to develop a cinematic superhero universe that can be pitted against that of Marvel Studios.
Directed by Zack Snyder, ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ is scheduled for a U.S. release on Mar. 25, 2016, in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters. Snyder will also return to the director’s chair when filming for ‘Justice League Part One’ movie, in which Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman will all be returning in 2017.
