Marvel Cinematic Universe has been seeking that special female touch to spruce up their superhero movies and they have reportedly been courting "Selma" director Ava DuVernay to direct their 2017 standalone film "Black Panther," which would star Chadwick Boseman.

Unfortunately though, they were turned down by DuVernay.

According to her interview with Essence during the Essence festival in New Orleans, DuVernay confirmed that Marvel has indeed sought her out to direct "Black Panther," and while she thinks highly of the studio, she had to turn their offer down because they could not see eye to eye as to where they movie's story is headed.

"I think I'll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be," she said. "Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they're fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me."

DuVernay added: "I loved meeting Chadwick and writers and all the Marvel execs. In the end, it comes down to story and perspective. And we just didn't see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later. I love the character of Black Panther, the nation of Wakanda and all that that could be visually. I wish them well and will be first in line to see it."

Previously, Marvel recruited director Patty Jenkins to helm "Iron Man 2," which would have made her the first woman to direct a Marvel superhero film. However, she had creative differences with the studios which prompted her to leave the project, which was then turned over to Jon Favreau.

Jenkins' departure really infuriated "Thor 2" star Natalie Portman, but she was contractually obligated to complete the film as the character "Jane," who is also Thor's love interest. Marvel blamed Jenkins for "lack of clarity," which would make the movie "difficult" to accomplish.

For Jenkins' part, the "lack of clarity" was hurled on Marvel, since they were not happy with the rewrites that were being done on the film. The director was certain that she would not even be hired in the first place because of her strong vision for "Thor 2," and getting her might have something to do with Portman's enthusiasm with the director.

For now, Jenkins will be directing Marvel's competitor Warner Bros.' "Wonder Woman" film. On the other hand, DuVernay is filming a murder mystery and love story with "Selma" star David Oyelowo.
