Entertainment Weekly has released the cover of its annual Comic Con preview issue, giving fans a one-of-a-kid glimpse at the titular super heroes from the highly anticipated ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ film.
According to director Zack Snyder, the idea of letting Henry Cavill’s Superman battle it out with Ben Affleck’s Batman who did not necessarily trust the Man of Steel began as merely a creative idea relating to Easter eggs.
"I said, 'What about at the end of the movie we do a scene where there's a crate full of kryptonite delivered to Wayne Manor,'" Snyder shared about his crucial meeting with franchise members Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer.
"Everyone was like…'Okaay.' Once you say it out loud it's a problem because you can't unsay it,” the 49-year-old helmer said.
Although there have been scarce details about the movie’s plot, ‘Batman v. Superman’ had reportedly taken inspiration from Frank Miller’s series, ‘The Dark Knight Returns’, which pitted the two superheroes against each other.
When asked whether it would be a fair fight for Batman, who has had numerous iterations over the past years ranging from Michael Keaton to Christian Bale, Affleck opened up about how his character has undergone more personal changes this time.
"He's on the verge of being swallowed up by the anger and the rage that we see haunt this character in the other manifestations of it," the recently divorced actor explained. "But this guy is further down the line and has become more embittered and cynical."
Aside from Batman and Superman, they will also be joined by Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot, and Aquaman, portrayed by Jason Momoa. Such heroes are known to be the key characters for Warner Bros’ to come up with a cinematic superhero universe that will rival Marvel Studios.
In addition, Entertainment Weekly also unveiled several new photos that revealed the heroes’ alter-egos, Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince, out of their costumes.
“I love the fact that there was this ‘Thomas Crown Affair,’ Bond-y sexy scene that they wrote about two people who are pretending to be two different people who each know the secrets of the other person,” Affleck said of the scene.
A photo of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor was released, showing the villain to be sporting long auburn hair- a clear contrast to the actor’s bald appearance in a photo that was previously released.
Snyder will return for directorial duties when filming for a new ‘Justice League’ movie begins, in which Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman will all be returning in 2017.
Meanwhile, ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ is scheduled for a U.S. release on Mar. 25, 2016, in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters.
