The developer of the crowd-funded space simulation project "Star Citizen" announced that the release of the game's first-person shooter mode has been delayed.

Cloud Imperium Games founder Chris Roberts cited technical problems and game play issues as the primary reasons behind the studio's decision to postpone the release of the module, IGN reported.

Roberts and his team have been teasing gamers about the first-person shooter (FPS) mode of "Star Citizen" ever since November of last year when it was unveiled during the PAX Australia event.

At first, "Star Citizen" only allowed gamers to roam around an open-world space environment using customizable ships. They can also engage in spaceship combats against other players through the game's Arena Commander mode.

Through an upcoming mode, dubbed as Star Marine, players will be allowed to step outside their ships to enjoy an FPS type of game play and participate in team-based death matches.

However, in a recent update on the studio's website, Roberts explained that the game engineers encountered problems with the module. Because of this, the executive decided to delay the release of Star Marine.

"We feel the current build doesn't feel like it lives up to the standards we've want to achieve with 'Star Citizen,'" Roberts wrote. "There are several issues that will need additional time in order to deliver the first iteration of the game play we want you to experience."

"The challenges facing the FPS launch are a mix of technical blockers and game play issues," he added. "After attempting to work with the legacy code, we decided that we needed to drop some of the legacy technology."

As to when gamers can expect to see the official launch of Star Marine, Roberts did not mention a projected release period. However, based on the explanation provided by the executive, it might take a while before gamers get to play the FPS mode of "Star Citizen."
