The new leaked images of Apple's iPhone 6S show off the device's front and rear shells.
Based on the images, the upcoming device will resemble the outer look of the current iPhone 6 model but will feature significant internal changes.
The images were obtained by insiders who 9to5Mac claims are very familiar with the Cupertino-based tech giant's manufacturing operations. According to the site, the casing of the iPhone 6S has the same thickness and overall size of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6. However, it is not yet clear if a larger iPhone 6S variant will be released to match the iPhone 6 Plus.
Aside from the size, the iPhone 6S shell also has the same cut-outs as the current model for the microphone, headphone, speakers and Lightning holes.
The leaked images also indicated that rumors about the iPhone 6S sporting a dual-lens camera configuration are not true. A closer look on the rear casing revealed that the upcoming handset will still have the same camera holes as the iPhone 6S.
Interestingly though, despite the similarity in terms of external appearance, the internal design of the casings shows significant changes. As pointed out by 9to5Mac, the mounting points particularly for the iPhone 6S' components and logic board are different compared to those of Apple's current flagship device.
Various sources noted that the mounting points may have been changed to accommodate an updated LTE chipset from Qualcomm. MacRumors reported that this could be the chip maker's MDM9635M processor.
If this is true, then the iPhone 6S could outperform the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S Plus. According to the site, the iPhone 6S could reach download speeds of up to 300Mbps with this chipset.
In addition, since this processor model is more energy-efficient than other models, it can enhance the battery life of the iPhone 6S, CNET has learned.
