Although Marvel Studios has been scheduled to release their second movie of the year in just several weeks more with ‘Ant-Man,’ fans have also been looking forward to what could be coming up for the new ‘Spider-Man.’
According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, the upcoming spider hero reboot will be significantly influenced by John Hughes.
“It’s the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting,” Feige explained. “…we haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie – only John Hughes could – but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us.”
Feige also opened up about Spider-Man’s “deep bench of rogues” in the upcoming movie, stating that they are currently planning to put forward the villains which fans have not seen in past films before.
The upcoming ‘Spider-Man’ reboot, which will make its way to cinemas in July 2017, will see English actor Tom Holland as the web-slinging hero.
According to Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, the 19-year-old actor has signed on to portray the teenage alter-ego of Peter Parker as he spends his time in high school in the upcoming film that is yet to be given a final title.
Holland has also taken to social media and posted clips of him practicing his webslinging skills on Instagram.
In addition, Feige has also dropped hints about Marvel’s upcoming take on ‘Doctor Strange,’ which is scheduled to begin filming this year in London.
“We send Ant-Man on a very weird, mind-bending journey at the end of Ant-Man. It was something we hadn’t seen in a shrinking movie before, but it also represents the tip of the mind-bending weirdness we’re going to do in Strange, which I think will surprise people,” Feige stated.
Written by Jon Spaihts and directed by Scott Derrickson, ‘Doctor Strange’ will focus on the story of neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange who, after a car accident, begins to explore the unknown world of magic and alternate dimensions.
Benedict Cumberbatch will take on the titular role in the movie in which he becomes the Sorcerer Supreme, whose task is to protect humanity from magical and mystical threats.
Meanwhile, award-winning actress Tilda Swinton has signed on to the movie as The Ancient One, typically recognized as a male role. As such, the upcoming ‘Doctor Strange’ is being deemed as an example of the increasing trend of diversification among films that are based on comic books.
In addition, Oscar-nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor will reportedly take on the role of villain Baron Mordo, the Master of the Mystic Arts’ arch enemy, opposite Cumberbatch.
Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ will make its way to theaters on Nov. 4, 2016.
