Various sources are reporting that Samsung is preparing to launch the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for the Galaxy Grand Prime Value Edition.
This may come as a surprise to users since this handset model has not yet been officially unveiled or released by Samsung.
According to NDTV, the Value Edition will serve as the mid-range variant of the Galaxy Grand Prime, which came out in October of last year. Details of the Galaxy Grand Prime Value Edition were recently leaked through a benchmark site but its release date has not yet been revealed.
Like the original model, the Value Edition will feature a 5-inch Quad HD display with a resolution of 540x960 pixels. The new version will also come with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage.
The Value Edition, however, will come with a different chipset. Instead of the original's quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410, the upcoming model will be equipped with the Marvell PXA19808 processor.
As for the update, the Value Edition was previously seen in a benchmark database running on the Android 5.0 Lollipop. But as reported by Ubergizmo, it seems Samsung will upgrade the device's OS to version 5.1.1 through an update.
Currently, the update is only available in Poland and Panama and features the firmware versions G531FXXU1AOF7 and G531MUBU1AOFB respectively. Both versions are around 730MB in size and come with various security and stability enhancements.
Although announcements regarding update roll outs are generally considered as good news, this new information might disappoint or even anger owners of the original Galaxy Grand Prime model.
After all, aside from launching an update for an unreleased device, Samsung has not yet upgraded the Galaxy Grand Prime's OS from the stock Android 4.4.4 KitKat since the handset came out in 2014. Currently, there are no details yet as to when the original model will receive an Android Lollipop update.
