OnePlus is aiming to become a pioneer in the smartphone industry by launching its upcoming flagship device, dubbed as the 2, through a virtual reality presentation.

According to the company, the launch is scheduled to happen on July 27 at 7 p.m. PT.

For the 2's unveil, company founder Carl Pei said that he doesn't want to introduce its next flagship device through a traditional method such as speaking in front of an audience inside an auditorium. Instead, he wants supporters of the company to fully experience the launch event through virtual reality technology.

"A VR launch lets you stand right next to our team and our fans as we unveil our new flagship," Pei wrote on the OnePlus forum page. "You'll be able to look around as you check out the phone in a new way and maybe even find a few hidden Easter eggs."

"It's a new way of thinking about a product launch," the executive added. "We aren't talking at you; we are talking with you."

As to how the company plans to do this, Pei noted that OnePlus has developed its own headset similar to Google's Cardboard virtual reality viewer, according to 9to5Google. Dubbed as the OnePlus Cardboard, the executive said that it is easy to assemble and works with the OnePlus device.

With the headset, users will be able to join OnePlus 2's launch when it streams in July.

Currently, the OnePlus Cardboard is not yet available to the public but the company said it plans to launch the device soon. Based on the description of the headset, it seems OnePlus might give away its very own VR headset for free to users since the company stated that it does not plan on making money from it.

As to what users can expect to experience in the 2's launch event, Pei said it will feature the winning entries from the Your OnePlus Story and Photo Mania 2015 contests.
