The last people saw of William Hurt's character General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross was in "The Incredible Hulk" which starred Edward Norton. His character was antagonistic and determined to capture Dr. Bruce Banner, or rather Hulk at all costs, even if it meant breaking his own daughter Betty Ross' heart.
The actor has confirmed that he will be reprising his role in the upcoming Marvel movie "Captain America: Civil War," and he is pretty excited to play the authoritative figure once again.
"Well first of all it was delightful to get that call," Hurt told IGN about being recruited again by Marvel to reprise his role as General Ross. "And second of all... how am I going to catch this train? Or how am I going to catch this 747? Because it can't land for you. It's got to keep going."
Hurt tried to talk about his role without giving away any spoilers, but based on his statements, it seems like his character will be evolving into something more significant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
"I loved playing Ross the first time because I was able to try and create an ego as big as the monster he was chasing. And one that was as warped too," he said. "Ross in 'Civil War' is different because it's a different style. It's a more modernized style. And what they've done is they've taken a character who was the Ross from the older film and made a new version. This is a much newer Ross. A much different Ross. And I liked that a lot. I haven't had a lot of time to understand it, but I'm doing the best I can. And they haven't fired me yet."
So what is this "different" thing about General Ross? Could he possibly be hinting about Red Hulk, which he transforms into in the comic books?
Red Hulk is a highly aggressive character who is keen on destroying Banner's Hulk, but after they came face to face in battle, Red Hulk was defeated and then imprisoned in their Gamma Base. Eventually though, Banner vouches for him and convinces Captain Steve Rogers (Captain America) to let the Red Hulk become a part of the Avengers.
Red Hulk reportedly plays an important role in the Infinity Gems storyline, since it was he who helps Thor reclaim Namor's Time Gem from the ocean and acquire the Power Gem from the villain named Hood.
