Sony has officially announced that the new PlayStation 4 console model with 1TB of hard drive space will be available in selected regions starting next month.
Dubbed as the 1TB PS4 Ultimate Player Edition, the console will debut in Europe and certain PAL territories on July 15.
The Japanese tech giant made the announcement through the PlayStation Blog. The launch of Sony's latest console model comes weeks after its rival Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One variant with 1TB storage capacity.
But aside from doubling the hard drive of the PS4, Sony also added a few design changes to the 1TB PS4 Ultimate Player Edition. Instead of a glossy finish as seen in the traditional console, the top surface of the new model will sport a matte look, according to The Verge.
In addition, the new variant weighs 10 percent lighter and consumes less power than the original console.
Sony did not reveal the retail price of the 1TB PS4 console but said that it will vary depending on the local retailers.
Speculations about Sony working on a PS4 model with 1TB of hard drive space started to surface shortly after Microsoft announced that it will double the storage capacity of its Xbox One console.
These rumors were then supported by a document filed by Sony to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) earlier in June, according to Engadget. Based on the FCC filing, Sony was working on a new computer entertain system with model number CUH-1215B that has 1TB of HDD capacity.
This led various sources to conclude that the tech company was indeed preparing to bulk up the storage space of the PlayStation 4.
Engadget noted that since the document was submitted to the FCC, this indicates that the 1TB PS4 Ultimate Player Edition will also be released in the U.S. Sony, however, has not yet issued a statement as to when the gaming console model will debut in the country.
