NBA All-Star Weekend will be hosted by the city of Charlotte, North Carolina at Time Warner Cable Arena in 2017. Charlotte is the home of the Hornets basketball team. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will make a formal announcement on Tuesday, June 23 at a press conference. All-Star Weekend is a national basketball competition between Western Conference teams and Eastern Conference teams.
Charlotte and Hornets’ officials made a bid to host the All-Star Games in Summer 2014. Silver visited the city in Fall and confirmed that is no doubt that Charlotte would host a game. City officials agreed to pay $33.5 million in renovations to Time Warner Cable Arena. The total cost of upgrades is $40 million. Charlotte last hosted the All-Star Game in 1991 at Charlotte Coliseum.
“Personally, I’m very excited about coming back here. I don’t think there’s any question it’s going to happen, just a matter of when,” said Silver on December 2014.
The event typically brings thousands of fans from all across the nation to one city. The three-day event begins on Friday and ends on Sunday. A total of 30 teams participate in All-Star Weekend. Fifteen teams from the Western Conference and fifteen teams from the Eastern Conference make up the 30 teams. Fan ballots decide the starting lineup for each group. The divisions are led by the head coach with the best record.
All-Star Weekend includes a slam-dunk contest, 3-point shooting contest, game between 1st and 2nd year NBA professional players, a fan festival, and a Development League All-Star Game. The All-Star Game occurs on Sunday night. The event occurs annually in February. In 2016, it will be hosted at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada, home of the Raptors. The event first began in 1951 at Boston Garden, Massachusetts.
