Details of patents filed by Samsung strongly indicate that the upcoming Galaxy Note 5 will be equipped with unique features that were not included in the Galaxy Note 4.
According to various sources, the South Korean tech firm's upcoming handset will sport foldable design and a stylus pen that can be ejected from the smartphone's body.
Ecumenical News learned that in 2013, Samsung filed a patent with the Korean Intellectual Property Office for a design technology for a foldable tablet. Based on the patent, the design makes use of a flexible screen that has three folding panels. The entire device can then be folded in half through two seams.
This unique design was then brought up again in 2014 after Vice President Lee Chang-hoon of Samsung addressed the company's investor forum regarding the firm's long-term plans. According to the executive, Samsung aims to incorporate the same folding technology to its future tablet and smartphone devices.
Aside from folding devices, Samsung recently filed another patent for an ejectable stylus pen. Based on the illustrations and other details obtained by Patently Mobile, the S-Pen will be concealed inside the smartphone's body beside its battery.
Through a combination of sensors, electromagnets and a locking mechanism, the user can eject the stylus pen using a voice command or a touch screen gesture. According to Samsung, this feature can greatly enhance the convenience of using the device.
"Since it is possible to automatically eject the touch pen only with a simple manipulation and/or command, it is easy to manipulate the electronic device with one hand, and since a separate locking device for confining the touch pen isn't needed, it is possible to enhance the usage convenience of the electronic device," the company wrote in the patent according to Patently Mobile.
As for the smartphone's other specs, previous rumors suggested that the Galaxy Note 5 will come with a 5.9-nch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2160x3840 pixels. It will be powered by Samsung's Exynos 7422 processor and will also feature a USB-C port.
