Walt Disney Pictures could be pushing through with the third installment in the well-loved ‘Princess Diaries’ film franchise, the Tracking Board claims.
The first film, which helped place Anne Hathaway forward towards the limelight, had been adapted from the 2000 novel written by Meg Cabot with the same title.
The story follows the seemingly ordinary and modest teenager Mia Thermopolis who finds out that she is the heir to the fictional Kingdom of Genovia.
Also starring Oscar winning-actress Julie Andrews, ‘Princess Diaries’ became a big hit among audiences, which led to a sequel that saw the comeback of both Andrews and Hathaway as well as the introduction of a new character played by Chris Pine.
For the past years, reports and speculations about Disney’s plans of unveiling a third installment have been plenty. However, franchise star Hathaway has turned down such rumors with her non-involvement in a new sequel on several occasions.
While plot details for ‘Princess Diaries 3’ are reportedly being kept under wraps, sources have claimed that the movie may not guarantee the comeback of Hathaway, particularly with a plan of working on a reboot of the franchise.
Martin Chase Productions’ Debra Chase has been set to return and produce the new project after working as a producer on the last two movies. Chase has had experiences in other films of the same genre, such as the ‘Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ series.
Making its premiere in 2001, ‘The Princess Diaries’ was helmed by Garry Marshall and was co-produced by the late Whitney Houston. The teen romantic-comedy movie became a commercial success and pulled in over $165 million in the global box office,
Its sequel, ‘The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement’, was released in 2004 with a script written by well-known TV showrunner Shonda Rhimes.
Meanwhile, after recently starring in blockbuster movies such as Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Interstellar’, Hathaway lands a new leading role in the sci-fi movie ‘Colossal.’
The award-winning actress has joined director Nacho Vigalondo’s upcoming movie, which should be expected to be somewhere in the lines of “Godzilla meets Lost in Translation”.
Hathaway will also star in the comedy film ‘The Intern’ by Nancy Meyers in which she portrays the head of a fashion website who hires an intern, to be played by Robert De Niro.
The multi-talented star will also take on a leading role in Disney’s ‘Alice Through the Looking-Glass’, the sequel to ‘Alice in Wonderland’ from 2010. The forthcoming American fantasy film also includes Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen and Rhys Ifans, and is scheduled for an official premiere on May 27, 2016.
