The executive of Xiaomi is mulling over the idea of not including standard chargers with the company's future devices.
According to company CEO Lei Jun, shipping smartphones, tablets and other gadgets without their respective chargers can effectively reduce the company's environmental footprint, GSM Arena reported.
Jun asked the supporters of Xiaomi through his Weibo account. He said that since smartphones always come with their own chargers, people most probably have at least one or two extra units lying around.
So, if they get a new Xiaomi smartphone, they can still use an old charger for the handset. Or, they can purchase one for around $1.7. Basically, reusing old chargers will prevent the extra ones from being thrown out and ending up in landfills.
In addition, as noted by Uber Gizmo, most devices currently available in the market can be charged through laptops or computer using a micro USB or Lightning port. This feature eliminates the need for devices to be plugged into a standard wall charger.
Also, for those with three different devices such as a smartphone, tablet and a smartwatch, they can simply purchase an aftermarket charger with three different ports to power up their gadgets.
But since port-based chargers vary according to power output, it could take some devices a couple of hours or even longer before reaching a full charge. However, this probably won't matter if the user is truly conscious about the environment.
Going back to Jun's post, his proposal to cut back on the supply of bundled chargers for Xiaomi's future devices can be considered as a significant contribution in the tech industry's efforts to conserve the environment.
However, despite saying that the move will help protect the environment, some users who responded to Jun's post speculated that that Xiaomi is just using the ecological issue as an excuse to reduce its production cost, according to NDTV.
