To celebrate this year’s Global Smurfs Day last June 14, Sony Pictures Animation confirmed the voice cast of ‘Get Smurfy’- a completely new, animated feature film that follows the distinct style of creator Peyo Culliford.
‘Get Smurfy’ follows the story of Smurfette and her brothers as they explore and hike through the unfamiliar Enchanted Forest as an attempt to find out about a legendary Smurfs village before their enemy, the evil wizard Gargamel, gets there first.
As they go through the magical paths, several mysteries relating to how the Smurfs first came about are brought to light. These include the possibilities of the little blue creatures coming in any other colors and having organic mushroom houses. They also come across the question as to why there is only one girl among 99 boys.
Pop star and actress Demi Lovato has already joined the film to lend her voice as Smurfette, the female Smurf who was created by Gargamel himself to distract and trap the Smurfs but was rescued later on.
Papa Smurf did most of the rescuing and he will be voiced by ‘Homeland’ star and Emmy winner Mandy Patinkin. Their nemesis, Gargamel, will be played by Emmy-nominated actor Rainn Wilson, who previously starred in ‘The Office’ and ‘Monsters vs. Aliens.’
Scheduled for a global release on Mar. 31, 2017, the upcoming feature-length animated adventure movie will be helmed by Kelly Asbury, produced by Jordan Kerner and co-produced by Mary Ellen Bauder.
Asbury previously worked on animated films such as ‘Shrek 2’ and ‘Gnomeo and Juliet while Bauder has had experience with ‘Hotel Transylvania.’ Kerner already worked with the blue creatures in the 2011 live-action/computer-animated comedy film ‘The Smurfs’, helmed by Raja Gosnell.
“The continued popularity of the Smurfs is unmistakeable, and this new outing will return them to the fully-animated world that launched them,” Asbury explained.
‘Get Smurfy’ stands as a completely new entry in the movie franchise developed by Columbia Pictures, which has already pulled in over $900 million in the international box office.
“We felt it was important to take a very different approach with this origin story,” Kerner shared. “…We couldn’t be more excited with the talented new cast we’re starting to assemble for our Smurfy reboot!”
Even Sony Pictures Animation’s Kristine Belson promises that the team of talented artists and filmmakers will be delivering “the same spirit of adventure” that audiences have grown up with and have made them lifelong fans.
