After becoming a surprise hit at the box office last year, ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ will be having a sequel, as confirmed by director Matthew Vaughn.
Back in April, it was already rumored that 20th Century Fox was working on a sequel for the spy-fi action comedy movie.
“Well, the good news is that I’m writing it next door at the moment,” Vaughn said. “If I think I can get the script good enough, then we are making it. We are doing our damndest to make that happen.”
Aside from a new American agent character joining the Kingsman organization, ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service 2’ will be including a new element that is expected to raise eyebrows of fans and critics alike. Vaughn himself will be taking on the director’s chair once again, despite having never helmed a sequel to his own movies before.
“I’m in love with these characters and I want to work with them again so I’ll probably be breaking the rule of me tending not to make sequels,” Vaughn shared.
Currently, the filmmaker is kept busy as he works on a remake of the sci-fi adventure ‘Flash Gordon’ for Fox. However, plans remain indefinite as Vaughn is known to drop out of projects that he “is not fully passionate about”, including ‘Thor’, ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past.’
It has even been rumored that the screenwriter will not be staying long for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, although it is yet to be confirmed.
Based on the Icon Comics miniseries in 2012 by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar, ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ focuses on a secret spy organization that recruits a talented street kid and allows him to sign on to the agency’s competitive training program just in time to address a global threat, particularly a mass genocide, brought on by an evil tech genius.
Academy Award-winning actors Colin Firth and Michael Caine star in the movie together with Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson. ‘The Imitation Game’ actor Mark Strong also makes an appearance in the movie in addition to newcomers Taron Egerton, Sofia Boutella and Sophie Cookson.
Written by Vaughn and Jane Goldman, ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ has raked in over $401 million at the global box office. The film has already made its Digital HD debut last May 15 as well as an official release for Blu-ray and DVD last June 9.
