After starring in sci-fi films ‘Elysium’ and Interstellar’, Matt Damon stars in the film adaptation of Andy Weir’s book ‘The Martian’ and takes on a mission to Mars only to find himself stranded and caught up in chaos.

Last Sunday, 20th Century Fox's new trailer for Ridley Scott’s ‘The Martian’, in which Damon portrays Mark Watney, was unveiled. The clip showed Watney and his Ares 3 crew members being hit by a sudden storm and ordered to leave their mission on the red planet.

Unfortunately, Watney gets left behind and was presumed to be dead. Waking up and finding himself alone, the crew’s resident botanist returns to the Ares 3 base and realizes that he will not be able to exchange messages with NASA or his crew.

Even if he could, he would need four more years for the next manned mission to be able to reach him. Moreover, his supplies are expected to last him for only another 31 days.

"So in the face of overwhelming odds, I'm left with only one option," Watney says, as he puts on a pair of protective glasses. This means having to grow his own crops and come up with a means of contacting ground control.

“He finds he has a problem, and instead of him collapsing into terror—because he’s got 28 days to live – and that’s if everything goes well for him – he knuckles down and actually starts to work it out,” director Scott said in an interview with EW last month.

Interestingly, with Watney’s knowledge, Mars’ dry land can be turned into something that can help grow plant life while their badly ruined equipment can be tinkered into a machine that can send messages to the Ares 3 crew.

Although these crew members are determined to rescue their abandoned mate, NASA refuses to carry out the mission. The Ares 3 members are then forced to come up with a complex plan that may not necessarily guarantee their survival.

‘The Martian’ also has a star-studded supporting cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Sean Bean, Donald Glover, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

With a screenplay written by Drew Goddard, who previously worked on ‘World War Z’ and ‘The Cabin in the Woods’, ‘The Martian’ has been set to premiere in theaters this November.
