Google has started seeding the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update to some of its Android One handsets in India.
These include the Karbonn Sparkle V, Spice Dream Uno Mi-498 and the Micromax Canvas A1.
The availability of the OS upgrade was confirmed by tech site Android OS. According to the site's report, the update has a size of 11.8 MB for all the Android One handsets. Also, the update will upgrade the smartphone's OS build number to LMY47V.
As seen in previous roll outs for other handset models, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update comes with various new features as well as improvements for the Android One devices. According to the update's notes, the OS upgrade will improve the handsets' overall user interface and performance.
It also comes with various bug fixes to solve some problems experienced by those using Android 5.0 and Android 5.1 Lollipop. It is not yet clear if the update will be able to fix the handsets' memory leak issues.
So far, the update was only rolled out for Android One smartphones in India and it is being conducted in stages, which means not all users will be able to receive it at the same time.
Users can manually check the availability of the update by checking their devices' System Updates through the Settings menu, according to NDTV.
As for those in other countries, there are no announcements yet from Google as to when or if the update will arrive in other regions.
The Android One project was established by Google in 2014 for its Android-based handsets. The initiative was created for users who are looking to get their first smartphone.
Originally, Android One was first launched in India in partnership with local smartphone makers Micromax, Spice and Karbonn. Then, Google expanded the project to cover other countries including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Philippines and Turkey.
Like in India, the Android One handsets sold in the other countries come from various local makers.
