One of the most awaited projects by Marvel Cinematic Universe is director James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" sequel, which will be released on May 5, 2017.

Gunn has already talked about his upcoming project a lot, saying that it will be "all about families," and that is why they will be delving into the relationship Star Lord (played by Chris Pratt) has with his father.

But now, the filmmaker is saying that there are just too many characters involved in the movie and that is why they will be trimming down the cast a notch, according to UPROXXX.

"There's just too many characters, so you can't concentrate on one and really get to know that character. I really want to get to know the characters that we know better, and yeah, we will be introducing a new character," he said.

Earlier, Gunn said that the top brass of Marvel feared that his sequel might be "too risky," but they decided to give him free reign with the movie, given the success of the original one. "They were like, 'Oh, whoa. That's risky, but okay.' We'll find out how well it works," he said.

The second movie will not be based on the comic books too, he clarified, but it will definitely answer a lot of questions fans had when the first movie wrapped up.

"It's not really based on anything. The story for Guardians 2 is an original story that I came up with that I started working on actually while I was shooting Guardians 1, and it'll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill's father and who he is and what's going on with that," he shared in Alison Rosen's podcast.

The biggest challenge they faced when creating the first movie was introducing all of the anti-heroes and establishing their stories, but now that they have successfully done that, Gunn believes it's time to "have a good time and have fun" with the sequel.

"I'm still excited about Star-Lord's character and where he goes," he said. "If the first film was about him and his mother, this is a story about fathers. So it's exciting to go there."

"I knew for a long time what the story of the second one was gonna be," he excitedly said, before quickly adding, "And the third one!"

Aside from Pratt's Star Lord, the other main cast include Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Batista as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon and Vin Diesel as the beloved sidekick Groot.
