Warner Bros. Pictures has recently announced that director James Wan, who previously worked on ‘Furious Seven’ and ‘The Conjuring’, is officially on board to helm the studio’s new ‘Aquaman’ feature film.
Jason Momoa, who played Khal Drogo in ‘Game of Thrones’, will be appearing in the movie for the titular role. The details on directorial duties were announced by Greg Silverman, Warner Bros. Pictures’ president for creative development and worldwide production. “We’ve been so lucky to have worked with James, first on New Line’s ‘The Conjuring’ and now on their upcoming ‘The Conjuring 2,' Silverman shared, “and are thrilled to have him on board as we continue to expand our DC slate.
Wan will also be going over the script written by Kurt Johnstad, who also worked on ‘300’ and ‘300: Rise of an Empire.’ Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder and Zack Snyder are also on board as producers. “James is not only a great storyteller but can make action truly explode on the big screen,” Roven said, describing Wan’s approach for directing.
He also deems Momoa as having a “dynamic presence” that strongly reaches out to audiences. Collaborating for ‘Aquaman’, Roven and Momoa are expected to bring on a considerable amount of energy for the character as Aquaman gets his first ever feature film. “The ‘Aquaman’ film will be a major tentpole picture for us and James’s span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material,” Silverman further stated.
Aquaman first appeared in the comic books in ‘More Fun Comics’ #73 that was released in 1941. Developed by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, the character became one of the founding members of the Justice League of America 20 years later. Up until this year, Aquaman has never been featured in the big screen as his only live-action appearances had been that of a teen on WB’s ‘Smallville.’
Before making a huge appearance in his solo film, Momoa’s character will first have his onscreen debut in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ by Zack Snyder, which is set for a release on Mar. 25, 2016. It has also been speculated that Aquaman will make a comeback on ‘Justice League: Part One’ that will hit cinemas on Nov. 10, 2017.The sea-dwelling character will then return to the big screen as he is expected to appear on ‘Justice League: Part Two’ on June 14, 2019.
