After ‘Spider-Man’ was announced to have finally been included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans began to question how a new approach towards Peter Parker’s character will play out and differ from past live-action versions that were portrayed by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
As such, Marvel followed with an announcement that the spider-hero in spandex will come back onscreen in a 2017 movie reboot that will feature Parker in high school and has already been bitten by the spider.
It remains uncertain as to who will be playing the webslinger in the upcoming reboot, although Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland are reportedly continuing to undergo exams to be chosen for the part. Nonetheless, results are in order anytime soon as Spider-Man is rumored to make a cameo appearance in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, which has already begun filming.
Parker took on an important role in the Civil War comic book series after acknowledging his identity as Spider-man years after keeping his superpowers secret.
As to who will take on directorial duties for the 2017 reboot, Jonathan Levine (‘Warm Bodies’, ‘50/50’) and Ted Melfi (‘St. Vincent’) are reportedly included in the final list of filmmakers. Levine is possibly the most accomplished director on the list, especially with a couple of hit movies already associated with his name.
John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, who wrote and helmed the new ‘Vacation’ reboot to be released this summer, have reportedly been in the list of potential ‘Spider-Man’ directors as well. They have been joined by Jon Watts, who recently made his feature debut with thriller film ‘Cop Car’, starring Kevin Bacon.
This has become a speedy process for the studio; without delays, it narrowed down the search from an initial set of a dozen directors into a group of four options. Final decisions come down to producers Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige (Marvel) as well as Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman. It has remained unclear, though, whether the director chosen for the job will also be writing the script.
Sony and Marvel have reportedly been meeting with other writers who might also work on the ‘Spider-Man’ reboot. Meanwhile, the plot for the upcoming ‘Captain America’ movie was revealed by Marvel last month, which will continue from where ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ concluded.
As Steve Rogers calls on a new team of Avengers to continue their mission in protecting humanity, international authorities and a new villain are both putting pressure on the superheroes to take sides and carry out their mission. The upcoming ‘Captain America: Civil War’, in which Spider-Man is said to be making a cameo, will hit theaters on May 6, 2016.
