ESPN’s 23rd Annual Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards (ESPY) will be on July 15 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California. The show donates a part of its proceeds to cancer research. The 2015 ESPYs host is American comedian Joel McHale. The show will broadcast live on ABC at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
“I’m thrilled to be hosting The ESPYS. Just ecstatic. After my stunning victory in the Iditarod this year by only using six Bichon Frises and a lamb, I think the sports world saw me as the logical host,” said McHale.
The ESPYs celebrate the biggest plays of the previous year in all areas of sports. It honors achievements and performances by athletes. Most of the awards are voted by fans and experts. Proceeds from the show are donated towards cancer research by The V Foundation.
"Joel is an extremely talented performer, a unique voice and a huge sports fan. His experience as a comedian and love of sports make Joel the perfect host for The ESPYS inaugural broadcast on ABC," said Connor Schell, the senior vice president of ESPN Films and Original Content.
The ESPYs recognize individual plays and team efforts in sports. It is the sports-centered awards show akin to music’s Grammy Awards, television’s Emmy Awards, theatre’s Tony Awards, and film’s Academy Awards. The awards show began in 1993.
