Simon Pegg has already opened up about writing the script for ‘Star Trek 3’ amidst speculations that the film’s shooting will begin soon.
The actor and writer revealed that he had been requested to create content that will make the movie “less Star Trek-y” as the studio aims for a style that is similar to that of ‘Avengers.’
Pegg recently announced that he has started on a fresh new script and that he and co-writer Doug Jung are struggling to finish everything under a tight deadline.
"We started again six months before we were due to start shooting, which is insane,” Pegg said in an interview with Radio Times. He added: "In fact we start shooting in Vancouver in four weeks – and we're only handing in our first draft today."
Meanwhile, new cast members have signed on to ‘Star Trek 3’, including Algerian actress Sofia Boutella who is on board for a mystery role. In March, it was also announced that ‘Pacific Rim’ actor Idris Elba will take on a villain role for the upcoming film.
Boutella and Elba has been set to join the other cast members who will reprise their roles for the new installment; these include Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and Zoe Saldana as the crew members of the U.S.S. Enterprise.
The original Captain Kirk, played by William Shatner, has also been rumored to make an appearance in the new film, although his cameo is still unconfirmed.
Helming the last two films, J.J. Abrams will be returning as well to produce the third installment in the rebooted sci-fi franchise.
Justin Lin, who previously directed ‘The Fast and the Furious’ films, is now on board to direct ‘Star Trek 3’ based on Pegg and Jung’s script.
Paramount Pictures made the official announcement that the sequel is up for a release on July 8, 2016, two months before the 50th Anniversary of the ‘Star Trek’ TV series.
‘The Man Trap’, in which the Enterprise crew members came across a shape-shifting salt vampire, brought the ‘Star Trek’ TV series to success on September 8, 1966.
