Wayward Pines is in a frenzy after the capturing and public execution of Beverly Brown. The townspeople are gathered in the square and begin chanting every single rule they must uphold to survive. They continue the night search for Ethan Burke. ‘Wayward Pines’ Season 1 Episode 3 “Our Town, Our Laws” aired on Thursday, May 28 on FOX.
Ethan breaks into Kate Hewson’s house and attempts to remind her of the person she used to be. He tells Kate that she is not evil like the rest and that she is different. Ethan reveals that he fell in love with her when they were partners in the Secret Service Agency because she was unafraid of anything and that she had courage. Kate is unyielding to Ethan’s request for her to escape town with him.
“You’ll never make it out of here alive,” says Kate as Ethan vanishes off into the night.
Ethan makes his way to the old abandoned house where he found the rotting corpse of former agent Bill Evans. Sure enough, he finds Beverly's dead body there too. It is hanging in an upper room with her hands tied to the ceiling. Ethan takes her body down and covers it with an embroidered veil, with the promise to reach her daughter.
Meanwhile, Ethan’s wife Theresa and son Ben are en route to track down Ethan’s whereabouts. Although they cannot be sure whether Ethan has abandoned their family to be with a former flame or he is merely on a mission, Theresa says to Ben that her instincts tell her that Ethan is in danger. She and Ben visit a Secret Service Agency office to ask about Ethan and Kate. She secretly logs into the computer system with Ethan’s ID. After figuring out the location of his last credit card transaction, she and Ben quickly leave the premises. Ethan’s boss Adam Hassler knows that they are hot on Ethan’s trails and begins to create a plan for damage control.
Ethan’s last transaction was made at a gas station in Idaho. She and Ben go there and show a photo of Ethan to a male cashier and asks if he has ever seen Ethan. The cashier tells them that Ethan was with another man and they had looked like they were dressed for a funeral. A boy standing in the store tells her that there was an accident in Wayward Pines. The cashier tells her that “it’s a nothing town not to far from here.”
Five miles away from Wayward Pines, Theresa’s car is stopped by none other than Sheriff Arnold Pope. He tells her that her car is leaking oil. Telling her that he will fix the problem, he commands her to enter her vehicle. Instead, the sheriff cuts a wire from her engine. Theresa and Ben continue driving towards the town.
At Wayward Pines, Ethan finds a way out of town by hopping into a food delivery vehicle registered to a different state. When the car stops and he exits the van, Ethan finds that he is in a strange loading area with many gates, one of which is labeled Wayward Pines. He sees rows of different cars and recognizes one belonging to his wife. Ethan goes inside and sees his son’s mangled guitar. Sheriff Pope flashes a light around the premises and shatters the car’s driver seat window to stab Ethan.
“I don’t even know what they see in you,” says Pope.
Ethan wakes up to the sound of a phone ringing. A female voice on the other line informs him that his family was discharged from the hospital. He walks out of the strange room and finds out that he is in the hospital. Nurse Pam tells him that his family went home. She hints that they are at Beverly’s abandoned house.
Theresa and Ben look around the house. Ben has a broken wrist. When Ethan arrives, they tell him that a realtor drove them from the hospital. Ethan tells Theresa and Ben to stay home and goes out to find Sheriff Pope, warning him to stay away from his family. On his way back, the sky is pouring rain. Dr. Jenkins confronts Ethan and asks about his family. Ethan in turn asks Dr. Jenkins what is wrong with everyone in the town. Dr. Jenkins merely states that everyone is trying their best.
“Come on, this isn’t an ordinary town. You know that!” yells Ethan.
“We need someone like you here in Wayward. Someone good,” says Dr. Jenkins, asking him to stay.
Ethan tells him that he can’t stay because he does not live here. The mailbox in front of Beverly’s house now states Burke. Ben sees Ethan walking into the bushes after a strange person. Ben follows them. When Theresa finds out that Ben is not home. She walks downstairs and finds Sheriff Pope raiding their fridge. Kate tells Ethan that she tried running and that she tried everything.
“The only way to stay alive here, is to play along,” says Kate.
Ben returns home and tells Theresa that Ethan is with Kate. Theresa and Ben pack their belongings and try to leave town. Sheriff Pope follows them. Theresa and Ben are stopped at the electric fence.
“You have to ask for my permission to leave,” says Pope.
Pope knocks down Ben. Ethan runs to their rescue and takes Pope down. Ben runs Pope over with the car.
“You think you want to know the truth, but you don’t. It’s worse than anything that you could imagine,” says Pope.
Ethan shoots Pope with his own gun, finding a remote control he presses the button. It opens the electrical fence.
“Look! Something just took his body! Did you see that?” exclaims Ben in horror.
The Burke family drive out as they hear the sounds of vicious animals howling in the night and electricity buzzing from the metal barricade.
